KV Mechelen tried everything to convince Masangu to stay, even promising a spot in the first-team squad of 25 players.

But Masangu, a profilic, modern defensive midfielder, had made up his mind. He decided to leave to join Roma, the club that had shown most interest in the previous 12 months.

The Belgium youth international joined the Giallorossi's youth squad, trained by Alberto De Rossi (Daniele's father), during the summer.

Other teams were also in for him: Fiorentina, Stoke and Standard Liège. He signed for three seasons at Roma, who paid Mechelen only €180,000 in compensation
